STONE & BLOCK RETAINING WALLS

Retaining Walls in Birmingham, AL

Hold back the hill, stop the erosion and turn a slope you can’t use into level, usable yard, with a wall built to stay put.

WHY A RETAINING WALL

Walls Built for Birmingham's Slopes and Red Clay

Over the Mountain neighborhoods and much of Shelby County sit on hillsides, and our clay soil sheds water fast. That combination washes out lawns, undercuts driveways and turns beds into mud slides after every storm. A properly built retaining wall holds the soil in place, levels out usable space and gives the whole landscape a finished, permanent look.

Alalawn builds walls from natural stone, stacked boulders and segmental block. Every wall starts with a compacted base, gravel backfill and a plan for where the water behind it will go, because water pressure, not the weight of the dirt, is what pushes most walls over.

We also replace a lot of old landscape-timber walls that have rotted out. We pull the timbers, rebuild the base and drainage and put in stone that won’t need replacing again.

OUR PROCESS

How We Build a Wall That Lasts

1. Walk the Slope

We look at the grade, the soil, where water runs and what the wall needs to hold, then lay out options and pricing.

2. Base & Drainage

Excavation, a compacted gravel base, backfill stone and drain line where needed, the part you never see and the part that matters most.

3. Build & Clean Up

We set the wall course by course, finish the beds or sod around it and leave the site clean.

Signs Your Yard Needs a Retaining Wall

  • Soil washing onto the driveway or sidewalk after heavy rain.
  • Exposed roots and bare, eroded banks where grass won’t hold.
  • A slope too steep to mow or too steep to use.
  • An existing wall that’s leaning, bulging or rotting, especially old timber walls.
  • Water and mud reaching the house from the hill above it.

If the problem is mostly water, a wall may need to be paired with a French drain or grading and erosion control. We’ll tell you honestly which fix the yard needs, and when a smaller, cheaper fix will do the job.

Retaining Wall FAQs

We build natural stone walls, stacked stone and boulder walls, and segmental block walls, sized to the slope and the load the wall has to hold.

Yes. Rotted landscape timber walls are one of the most common replacements we do. We remove the old wall, rebuild the base and drainage, and install a stone or block wall that will not rot.

Yes. Water pressure behind a wall is the main reason walls lean or fail. We include gravel backfill and, where needed, a perforated drain line so water can escape instead of pushing on the wall.

Cost depends on wall length, height, material, access and how much excavation and drainage is needed. We walk the property and give you options at different price points before any work starts.

Alalawn did a great job for us last week! Did a rock drainage area, sod in front yard, along with a pea gravel parking area. Also cleaned up a natural area for me that was out of control with old leaves/pinestraw. Ed was great to share his thoughts and the two men who were here on the project were very professional and completed the job quickly and cleaned everything up afterwards. I’d definitely recommend and use again.

Ed and his team did two projects for me in the last couple months (May and June 2026). First was a low rise stone retaining wall adjacent to a long, steep driveway. The one level wall was tied into my driveway in order to prevent the rainwater runoff from continuing to erode the lawn next to it. While doing this work I also had them install a short run by another concrete wall and adjacent to the landing. The second effort was a stone retaining wall up on the landing to replace a wooden timber wall I had installed eons ago and was rotted to the core. Again, very nicely done. Pricing was, I believe, fair and reasonable. I certainly couldn’t have done it myself and they delivered, installed, and cleaned up like the professionals they are. I’m totally sold on Ed and his team.

My front yard has been completely redesigned by Ed & his team. This was no easy task as I have a steeply sloped yard with old trees and lots of roots. After cleaning out the yard of roots, weeds and poison oak, they built a beautiful stone wall, laid sod, planted many beautiful flowering plants and finished with pine straw. They also solved some drainage issues on the side and in the backyard. They were timely and consistent with continuous communication. I highly recommend Alalawn for your landscaping and water drainage needs.

Incredible company. Did drainage work in our yard and fixed a problem we’ve had for years. Ed answered all my questions and even came back out to our property to make an adjustment based off our preferences. Pricing was excellent and work was done correctly and thoroughly. Would strongly recommend to everyone.

Ed and his team have a combination of 3 traits that not many landscaping companies have all 3 of. They do great work, they are very creative in solutions, and they are very fairly priced. I have had several landscaping/drainage companies come to my house that didn’t seem interested in weighing options, they immediately went to the most expensive option, and then quoted me for absurd pricing. I have had Ed’s team do 2 different drainage projects at my house, and for each one Ed laid out multiple solutions in varying price ranges, and he showed me pros and potential cons/things to be aware of, for each choice. It’s just a very honest company. I will be calling them before anyone else for future projects.

Ed and his team did a truly outstanding job on our new lawn and landscaping! It was a big job, and I felt like communication was going to be key in its success. Unlike all other companies we interviewed, the whole team really listened to what we wanted. I really wanted to create somewhat of a cottage garden feel in my new beds, instead of manicured boxwoods, and overgrown arborvitaes. Ed gave me his time, more than once, listened, and then took my amateur sketches and ideas, added his knowledge and expertise, and gave me my dream garden beds filled with my favorite perennials and evergreens (and some of his too)! Not only do they do the job right, but they really go the extra mile; before, during and after the job is complete. The Alalawn team is the best!

The team did an amazing job. They were highly skilled, knowledgeable & professional. They replaced the entire walkway landscaping fixtures that had been damaged by a storm. They also replaced areas of sod damaged by equipment.

Ed, Cruz, and Leo did an awesome job installing sod in my yard. Everything was thoroughly explained. All questions were answered. They got it done in one day. They even replanted some trees for me without me asking.
